Tassal wanted two reports on antibiotic use at salmon farms kept secret
Right to Information documents obtained by the Tasmanian Inquirer reveal that Tassal sought to block the public release of monitoring reports submitted to the Environment Protection Agency after using more than two tonnes of antibiotics at two of its fish farms. The Tasmanian salmon industry has used more than 31.4 tonnes of antibiotics in marine leases since 2003.

In May 2022 The Tasmanian Legislative Council published the report on its comprehensive Fin Fish Inquiry… a parliamentary investigation into the Tasmanian Salmon Industry which has been operating since the 1980s. 68 recommendations were tabled in parliament as part of this report, and the most promising was Recommendation 3. The Government’s response to the recommendation was not supportive, but for the health of Tasmania’s precious waterways, advocacy groups from across the State, and now the globe, are working to make sure that recommendation, and the report, don’t sit on a shelf.

A$755 million land-based RAS deal in Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia plans 600,000 tons a year by 2030
In what is being heralded as one of the world’s largest fish farm projects, the aquaculture development company Pure Salmon has signed a £420m (A$755m) deal with the Saudi government to build a huge RAS facility in Saudi Arabia.
Pure Salmon is owned by the Singapore-based equity fund 8F Asset Management Ltd and has already planned to develop a number of such projects of this type around the world, although nothing quite on the Saudi scale.
