Dear Minister,

In your Government's 'Threatened Species Action Plan' 20 priority places have been selected using the Action Plan’s prioritisation principles - one of these places is Tasmania's beautiful Bruny Island.

Yet to date you have been silent on the impact of industrial aquaculture farms that are around Bruny and in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel.

As a state Legislative Council report in May highlights, the industrial aquaculture industry is already having extensive ecological impacts in the fresh- and salt-waterways of the state while regulation, enforcement and scientific research are failing.

The salmon industry is now dominated entirely by multinational companies with no stake in Tasmania’s future, attracted by poor regulation, pitiful penalties for violations and negligible lease costs of public waters. The largest companies, Tassal and Huon Aquaculture are owned by Cooke Aquaculture and JBS Foods respectively. These companies are renowned globally for their poor environmental records wherever they operate.

We urge you to act now for all Tasmanians and indeed all Australians to protect Bruny Island's biodiversity hotspot, and work with the Tasmania's State Government to remove all industrial fish farms from the waters around Bruny Island and the D'Entrecasteaux channel.
